Mission Statement

Strabane Community Unemployed Group often referred to as Strabane Unemployed Centre was established in 1993 to address the high incidence of unemployment in Strabane, at the time male employment was 50% and there was also a high unemployment level among women. The organisation was set up to provide a central meeting place for the unemployed in Strabane, for interaction and information exchange.

Through informal networking, the unemployed are kept in touch with the local jobcentre. Information of interest to the unemployed is available in the Centre, for example, sources of advice on welfare and health and well-being but particularly on training provision. Information is gathered and analysed so that the Group can identify gaps in provision for the unemployed in the local area and the Centre will take steps to fill these gaps. If the centre is not equipped to help someone or provide particular service required then they will signpost the other organisations or work in partnership with an organisation to provide such a service.

The Centre promotes reconciliation and mutual understanding by building trust, provide education, information, training and capacity building for the unemployed of the area regardless of their creed, colour and class or sexual orientation and inclusive of all Section 75 groups. In partnership with North West Regional College, we provide education to the unemployed through a range of short courses. In partnership with the local Job Centre, we provide a monthly Job Club where the unemployed can avail of information on Job Search, CV writing, interview techniques and mock interviews.

The main aims of the Unemployed Centre are to provide a central meeting place for the unemployed in Strabane, to provide information on the local labour market, to provide welfare training and perhaps most importantly, to promote reconciliation and mutual understanding by building trust, providing education, information, training and capacity building for the unemployed of the area regardless of creed, colour or class.
